Welcome to Dahlonega

Nestled in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, approximately 70 miles north of Atlanta, the City of Dahlonega is the county seat of Lumpkin County and a true gem of Southern charm, natural beauty, and rich history. With a year-round population of around 7,000, Dahlonega enjoys vibrant seasonal increases thanks to its thriving tourism industry and its role as home to the University of North Georgia, one of only six senior military colleges in the United States. Incorporated on December 21, 1833, Dahlonega holds a distinguished place in American history as the site of the first major gold rush, predating California’s by two decades. The U.S. Branch Mint operated in Dahlonega between 1838 and 1861, producing the Half Eagle, Quarter Eagle, Gold Dollar, and the rare Three Dollar Gold coin. In 1873, the University of North Georgia was founded in the former mint building, later becoming the first state-supported college in Georgia to grant a degree to a woman. Dahlonega’s golden past continues to shape its vibrant present.

Today, visitors flock to the picturesque downtown square to explore one-of-a-kind shops, savor local cuisine, tour historic sites, try their luck gold panning, and experience the region’s flourishing wine country. The town is surrounded by scenic mountain views and rolling hills, offering a stunning natural backdrop that draws hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers year-round. In the fall, the landscape becomes a kaleidoscope of crimson, gold, and amber as the surrounding forests put on one of the most breathtaking foliage displays in the Southeast. This blend of history, culture, and outdoor beauty has earned Dahlonega national recognition—Southern Living magazine recently named it one of the "Best Small Towns in the South." During the holiday season, Dahlonega transforms into a festive winter wonderland. The town’s beloved “Old-Fashioned Christmas” celebration draws thousands to the historic square for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree, horse-drawn carriage rides, twinkling lights, holiday markets, and spirited performances. It’s a magical experience that captures the warmth and tradition of the season. With its panoramic mountain vistas, vibrant seasonal color, historic charm, and year-round festivities, Dahlonega offers an unforgettable experience for visitors and residents alike.
